Responding to a community proposal to rebrand Stage 2 as “BattleTested,” Buterin cautioned that true security depends on more than just hitting a technical milestone — the quality of the proof system beneath the surface is just as critical.
In a detailed post on X (formerly Twitter), Buterin dove into the mathematical reasoning behind why proof system robustness is the cornerstone of L2 reliability. While many view Stage 2 as a checkpoint for operational readiness, Buterin argued that without a high-assurance proof system, even Stage 2 networks could remain vulnerable.

Community Engagement: The “BattleTested” Proposal
The conversation stemmed from a suggestion by Ethereum contributor Daniel Wang, who proposed that L2s reaching Stage 2 should be labeled as “BattleTested”—a term meant to reflect real-world resilience under stress testing.
Buterin acknowledged the value of such a distinction but stressed that naming conventions must not overshadow technical realities, especially when proof validation remains inconsistent or underdeveloped.
Proof Systems: The True Benchmark for L2 Trustworthiness
Buterin introduced a model to explain how Layer 2 security evolves from Stage 0 to Stage 2, correlating it with improvements in the underlying cryptographic proof system. According to him, a poor-quality proof system at Stage 2 could offer less security than a high-quality system at Stage 1, illustrating why proof strength should be treated as a primary metric.
He also highlighted the role of multisignature (multisig) proof systems in minimizing the risk of critical failures.
