The privacy-focused Cake Wallet, best known for its deep roots in the Monero (XMR) ecosystem, is expanding its onchain privacy arsenal by integrating Zcash (ZEC). The update makes shielded ZEC transactions the default setting, putting user privacy front and center.
With this move, Cake Wallet is reinforcing its mission to make financial privacy the standard, not an advanced feature.
Zcash supports two transaction types: transparent and shielded. Transparent addresses behave like most blockchains, where sender, receiver, and amount are publicly visible. Shielded transactions, however, use zero-knowledge proofs to encrypt all sensitive details.
Cake Wallet now defaults to shielded ZEC transfers, meaning transaction data stays hidden unless users actively choose otherwise.
Cake Labs CEO Vikrant Sharma explained the philosophy clearly: privacy shouldn’t require extra effort — it should be the baseline experience.
Rising Adoption of Zcash and Blockchain Privacy Tools
The integration reflects a broader trend: growing demand for privacy-preserving crypto infrastructure. Zcash usage has increased steadily as more users look for ways to protect their financial data on public blockchains.
Even regulated platforms are embracing privacy tech. For example, Gemini enabled shielded Zcash withdrawals last year, signaling rising institutional comfort with privacy-focused assets.
Zcash’s share of shielded transactions has now climbed above 23%, showing both trust in its cryptography and a reduced fear that privacy tools could cause regulatory issues.
Cake Wallet Responds to Community Demand
According to Cake Labs, support for Zcash was added after repeated requests from the community.
Even when users make transparent transfers, Cake Wallet ensures they originate from shielded sources, automatically rotate receiving addresses, and autoshield funds — strengthening privacy even for non-shielded activity.
The wallet also supports advanced Bitcoin privacy features such as Silent Payments, PayJoin, and MWEB for Litecoin, making it one of the most privacy-focused multi-chain wallets available.
Criticism and Ongoing Debate Around Zcash
Not everyone is happy with the Zcash integration. Some users have revived old claims questioning Zcash’s security. Analytics firm Arkham has stated it can deanonymize some Zcash transactions — a claim strongly disputed by privacy advocates and Zcash supporters.
Meanwhile, the Zcash Foundation recently announced that the U.S. SEC closed its long-running investigation, removing a major cloud of uncertainty around the project.
NEAR Intents and Cross-Chain Swaps Added
Alongside Zcash support, Cake Wallet also rolled out NEAR Intents, a popular cross-chain swap method used heavily by Zcash and privacy-focused users.
This upgrade strengthens Cake’s position as a hub for private, multi-chain, user-controlled finance.
A Shifting Zcash Ecosystem
The update comes during a turbulent period for Zcash development. Just last week, the entire Electric Coin Company (ECC) team resigned to launch a rival wallet project called Cashz, following a dispute with its nonprofit parent organization, Bootstrap.
