United States President Donald Trump has officially granted a full and unconditional pardon to Ross Ulbricht, the creator of the infamous darknet marketplace, Silk Road. The announcement was made through a post on Trump’s Truth Social post.
โI just spoke to Ross William Ulbrichtโs mother and informed her that, in honor of her and the Libertarian Movement, which stood by me so strongly, Iโve signed a full and unconditional pardon for Ross,โ Trump stated. He went on to criticize the judicial process that led to Ulbrichtโs conviction, calling those involved in his prosecution “lunatics” who also targeted Trump politically.
Ulbricht had been sentenced to two life terms plus 40 years without parole for his role in founding Silk Road, a darknet platform used for trading illegal goods, including narcotics, with bitcoin as the primary currency.
Ulbrichtโs family expressed overwhelming gratitude for the president’s decision. The Free Ross campaign shared on X (formerly Twitter):
โWords cannot express how grateful we are. President Trump is a man of his word, and he just saved Rossโs life. ROSS IS A FREE MAN!!!โ
Ross Ulbrichtโs case has been a focal point for libertarians and members of the crypto community for years, who viewed his sentence as excessively punitive. His vision for Silk Road was deeply rooted in libertarian ideals, emphasizing free markets and personal freedom, themes that resonated strongly within the early cryptocurrency movement.
Silk Roadโs Role in Cryptoโs Early Days
Silk Road played a significant role in the adoption of Bitcoin as a medium of exchange, but it also fueled the narrative associating cryptocurrency with illegal activities. Following the platformโs shutdown in 2013, U.S. authorities seized around 174,000 BTC from wallets linked to Silk Road, much of which has since been auctioned by the government.
A Campaign Promise Fulfilled
Trumpโs pardon fulfills a key promise he made during his presidential campaign, where he pledged to commute Ulbrichtโs sentence on his first day if reelected. A similar commitment was made by his ally and former presidential contender, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Ross Ulbricht himself acknowledged Trumpโs support in a heartfelt post last year:
โLast night, Donald Trump pledged to commute my sentence on day one, if reelected. Thank you. After 11 years in prison, itโs hard to put into words how I feel at this moment. Your unwavering support has given me hope for a second chance.โ
Prominent figures in the crypto space, including Erik Voorhees, Michael Goldstein, and Amir Taaki, were quick to applaud Trumpโs decision. Amir Taaki stated:
โI owe everything to Ross Ulbricht. Crypto became what it is today because of him. He made the ultimate sacrifice, and we all benefited from his work.โ
Trumpโs Broader Crypto Agenda
The pardon aligns with President Trumpโs pro-crypto platform, which includes several bold initiatives:
- Establishing a bitcoin strategic reserve.
- Appointing a more crypto-friendly SEC Chair.
- Forming a Crypto Presidential Advisory Council.
- Repealing SAB 121 and ending โOperation Choke Point 2.0.โ
- Positioning the U.S. as a global leader in bitcoin mining.
Ross Ulbrichtโs release marks a turning point for the intersection of cryptocurrency and politics, as well as a victory for those advocating for justice reform. President Trumpโs decision not only fulfills a campaign promise but also strengthens his position as a key ally of the crypto community. This pivotal moment sets the stage for further developments in the United States’ approach to blockchain innovation and digital assets.
