The Cosmos Interchain Foundation has officially backed the open-sourcing of Evmos, transforming it into the canonical Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) framework for Cosmos’ expanding multichain ecosystem of over 200 appchains.
Previously developed under the Evmos project, this framework will now be integrated into the official Interchain software stack as “Cosmos EVM”, aligning with the Cosmos SDK. This shift establishes a standardized EVM layer within the Cosmos ecosystem, enhancing Ethereum compatibility.
With this new integration, Cosmos-based blockchains can adopt Cosmos EVM, enabling:
- Full EVM support, including JSON-RPC and Ethereum wallet compatibility
- Seamless interaction with native ERC-20 tokens through a lightweight configuration
- Improved cross-chain interoperability via the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol
This advancement strengthens the connectivity between Ethereum and Cosmos, fostering more efficient multichain interactions.
Leadership Transition and Market Reaction
As part of this transition, Evmos co-founder Federico Kunze Küllmer will step down as a core contributor but will continue advising the Interchain Foundation on the modular architecture and interoperability of Cosmos EVM. Additionally, Altiplanic, the core developer behind Evmos, will no longer be involved in the project.
Meanwhile, the Evmos token has suffered a sharp 30% decline in the past 24 hours, reflecting market uncertainty following these structural changes.
The Evolution of Evmos and the Rise of EVM Standards
Originally conceptualized in 2016 as Ethermint, Evmos launched on mainnet in 2022 as a Cosmos-based chain designed to introduce Ethereum’s EVM framework into Cosmos. That same year, its developers secured $27 million in funding from Polychain Capital and other investors.
Over the past decade, the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) has become the dominant smart contract standard, widely adopted across multiple blockchain networks. With Cosmos EVM now in place, the Cosmos ecosystem aims to enhance interoperability and drive broader Ethereum integration.
